Helena Kriss as a Reader
Helena would consider herself a reader. Helena learned to read at a late age, but has loved it ever since. Helena's mom spent a large portion of her time teaching Helena to. If you were to ask Helena why people read, she'd give you a long list of answers. She wold tell you that they read to develop their vocabulary, to expand their horizons, to grow as a person, to have an adventure, to become so engrossed in another (fictional) person's life that they forget about their own for a time. Ultimately, she says, it boils down to finding an escape from whatever may be going on in your life at that moment.
In order to become a good reader, you have to READ. Read whenever you can, read all works of writing, be open to new styles of writing. One must keep an open mind whilst reading to get the full reading experience.
What makes reading easy for Helena is the fact that she finds interest in most things. She finds it easy to become involved in the story of whatever she is reading. Admittedly, Helena does generally read novels that are tailored to her interests, but she is never opposed to stretching her limits and reading something different from her usual choices.
The hardest part about reading for Helena is also the easiest - finding interest. The book has to have a good hook or Helena tends to dismiss it before anything happens.
Helena makes her book choices primarily via recommendations from other people. She looks for plot, structure, word choice, and how easily these attributes meld together.
Unfortunately, Helena has a hard time fitting reading into her free time - assuming she has free time. She used to read day and night. Hopefully this habit will resume once she gets some free time.
In general, Helena loves reading. She thinks it's amazing how the same 26 letters rearrange to form words that create an entirely different world.
Helena as a Writer
Helena wouldn't consider herself a writer. She WILL write, when necessary, but writing isn't high on her priority list outside of school. If you asked Helena why people write, she'd more than likely say that it's to convey an idea - A thought, feeling, story, lesson, etc. Helena feels that in order for someone to be a proficient writer, a person has to have good literary skills, know the best way to get their ideas across the page, understand the best way to represent their thoughts, and be concise in their writing.
Helena enjoys all types of writing, but she tends to write more personally when it's not a school assignment. Helena is animated in everything she does, including her writing. Helena believes that everyone writes for a purpose, and the purpose behind hers is to vent - Just get everything out on the page.
Helena Kriss appreciates constructive criticism for school-based writing. Helena appreciates this especially whilst working on essays. For creative writing, Helena appreciates positive feedback, considering it's a free-thought assignment. If Helena were to write at home, it would be for herself and very few people will ever see it. Helena doesn't feel the need to get feedback from these people because (once again) the writing is hers and for her only.
In general, Helena enjoys writing. She feels it's one of the easiest ways to convey an idea. "The thing about writing is that it can be so filled with emotion, it can be raw and in the moment... Or it can be ground down into something completely void of emotion, it can be all facts. It's impressive." she says.
